Unit 1

Stamp

Plan:

1. Create an even slab of clay

2. Cut out circle from slab

3. Attach center of flower and petals using the score and slip method

4. Attach sphere on the backside of circle using the score and slip method

5. Use underglaze and paint flower

After 1st fire:

6. Add clear glaze just on flower

Reflection:

Overall, I think my stamp turned out well. Using the additive method (adding additional clay) is easier for me rather than the subtractive method (taking clay away). I used the additive method here, scoring and slipping the center of the flower and petals onto the base. I think I could've made the difference between the petals and base more dramatic, so when used, the flower would create a bigger indent. The glazing turned out good as well, I liked the colors I used which were: _______(cone 05) for the petals and ______ (cone 05) for the center. I left the rest of the piece unglazed, as I don't plan to use it around water. This also creates a bigger contrast between the flower and the base which is a cool effect.

Face/expressions

Plan:

1. Create two pinch pots

2. Attach pinch pots together using score and slip method

3. Cut out hole for mouth/smooth out inside of sphere

4. Make eye sockets/attach eyes, nose, ears and teeth using score and slip method

5. Add additional details by carving into clay

After 1st fire:

6. Use underglaze to paint the face, after glaze dries, use clear glaze over the full sculpture

Reflection:
Overall, I think my face could've been better. I was happy with the actual sculpting part of it, but the glazing turned out messy and the colors did not turn out exactly like how I wanted them to. For future projects, I will make sure to spend more time glazing, even though it's not my favorite part. for this project, I used glazes: _____ (cone 05), _______ (cone 05), and _______ (cone 05). The project is inspired by a cat in a movie I recently saw and so I tried to replicate the big eyes and wide mouth while also adding my own touch. I think I was successful in his aspect of it.

Small piece with under-glaze

Plan:

1. Create a sphere of clay for the shell, and carve out the middle for the indent

2. Cut out fin shapes for fins from a slab of clay, score and slip them onto the underside of the shell

3. Create a smaller sphere of clay for the head

4. Glaze with underglaze

After 1st fire:

5. Cover with clear glaze

Reflection:
I really liked how this turned out. I love the contrast between the navy (___ - cone 05) and the light blue (____ - cone 05). Next time, I have to remember to glaze the bottom because it's something I often forget to do. Luckily, I did not intend for this piece to be used by water, so it should be fine. I like the designs I did on the front fins as well as the spirals I did on the shell. There's not a lot more I can say about this piece since I like it so much, I ended up giving it to my sister, and she loves it!
